SEC Football 2024: Midseason Review and Predictions

As we approach the midpoint of the 2024 SEC football season, the conference has already delivered intense competition, major upsets, and thrilling finishes. With powerhouse programs like Georgia and Alabama leading the charge, and surprising contenders emerging, the rest of the season promises to be just as exciting. This blog will review the season to date, highlight Auburn University’s standing in the conference, and make predictions for the rest of the year.

The Heavyweights: Georgia and Alabama Lead the Pack

The Alabama Crimson Tide have some key victories, including a thrilling 41-34 win over then-No. 2 Georgia on September 28, 2024. This victory not only boosted Alabama’s resume but also marked Georgia’s first regular-season loss since 2020 (DawgNation, 2024). The Crimson Tide’s offense, led by quarterback Jalen Milroe, and a resilient defense have made them a contender to win the SEC West yet again.

Meanwhile, Georgia remains a top contender in the SEC East despite the setback against Alabama. The Bulldogs have shown their typical dominance in most matchups, with a well-rounded team led by quarterback Carson Beck. However, the loss to Alabama exposed some vulnerabilities, particularly early-game performance. Georgia will look to correct these mistakes as they push for another SEC Championship appearance (DawgNation, 2024).

Rising Contenders: Missouri and Kentucky Make Their Mark

Missouri has been one of the surprise teams in the SEC East, currently ranked No. 19 and sitting near the top of the division standings. Their balanced offense, led by Brady Cook, and a solid defense have made them a tough opponent for any team. Their upcoming matchup against Auburn on October 19 will further test their mettle.

Kentucky, under head coach Mark Stoops, has also impressed this season. The Wildcats have taken advantage of their physical style of play, particularly on defense, and have picked up some important wins. Kentucky’s hopes of contending for the SEC East crown will hinge on upcoming games (AL.com, 2024).

Auburn University: A Season of Growing Pains

Auburn’s 2024 season has been a challenging one, with a 2-4 overall record and 0-3 in SEC play. Under second-year head coach Hugh Freeze, the Tigers have struggled to find consistency, particularly on offense. Quarterback Payton Thorne has shown flashes of potential, especially in Auburn’s 73-3 blowout win over Alabama A&M, but against tougher SEC competition, the offense has struggled to score. Auburn’s offensive line has been a major point of concern, as it has struggled to protect Thorne and open up the running game for Jarquez Hunter (Auburn Tigers, 2024).

Defensively, Auburn has been inconsistent as well. The team has shown resilience in some games but struggled to stop the run against top-tier opponents like Georgia. The Tigers' defense must improve if they hope to pick up conference wins in the second half of the season. With upcoming games against Missouri and Kentucky, Auburn has opportunities to salvage the season, but it will require significant improvement on both sides of the ball (CBS Sports, 2024).

SEC West Race: Alabama and the Field

The SEC West is as competitive as ever, with Alabama leading the pack following their victory over Georgia. However, teams like LSU and Texas A&M are still very much in the race. LSU, despite a couple of losses, has one of the most explosive offenses in the nation, led by quarterback Jayden Daniels. However, defensive struggles have kept the Tigers from living up to their full potential. Meanwhile, Texas A&M has been solid but inconsistent (ESPN, 2024).

Predictions for the Rest of the Season

While Auburn may not be contending for an SEC title this year, the development of young players and continued growth under Freeze will be crucial for the future.
