Episode 1 Turnovers

Announcer: [00:00:00] All aboard! Hey, welcome to the Tigers Halftime Breakdown Podcast. We're here to talk about great Auburn sports and most of all, great, great football. Let's get to it.

Lisa: All right, everyone, welcome back for another deep dive. You know, we love diving deep into all things sports. And today. Well, Auburn football, they've had a bit of a bumpy ride so far, haven't they?

John: Yeah, you could say that. A real roller coaster.

Lisa: And with their game against Missouri coming up this Saturday, well Let's just say the stakes are high.

John: No doubt about it. This is a must win for the Tigers if they want to keep those bowl game hopes alive.

Lisa: Because, I mean, remember that wild season opener,

John: 73

Lisa: points against Alabama A& M felt like they were going to be unstoppable.

John: Right, exactly. Explosive offense, the whole nine yards, but then SEC play hit

Lisa: and,

John: and reality set in.

Lisa: Yeah, the SEC, it's a different beast, isn't it? But it's not just about the competition. I mean, they've shown they [00:01:00] can move the ball, put up points.

John: True, true. Andre Lambert Smith, for example. The guy's a playmaker.

Over 500 receiving yards, six touchdowns already. He's

Lisa: been a bright spot for sure.

John: Absolutely. And don't forget about Yarkes Hunter in the backfield. Come

Announcer: on down to halftime. If you haven't been in there before, let me tell you, it's all about great, great sports, sports, every day, sports, all year round, Auburn sports, professional sports, you name it.

If it's great, great sports, it's halftime. Come on down and be there.

John: Over 500 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He's been a workhorse for them.

Lisa: So what's the problem then? If they've got these offensive weapons, why are they sitting at two four?

John: Two words, turnovers. It's been their Achilles heel all season.

Lisa: Oh, tell me about it. Negative 11 turnover margin, if I'm not mistaken. That's rough.

John: It's brutal. You can't win games when you're practically giving the ball away. And it's not just fumbles either. Peyton Thorne, their quarterback, he's had some costly interceptions.

Lisa: That pick six against LSU still [00:02:00] stings.

It's like every time they get a little momentum, but bam, turnover.

John: Exactly. It kills drives, swings momentum. Yeah. It's demoralizing for the team, the fans. Everyone.

Lisa: And the frustrating part is, it's not like their defense has been terrible. They've actually been pretty solid in the red zone.

John: Yeah, they've had their moments.

But third downs, that's been a different story.

Lisa: Ah, third downs. The bane of any football team's existence. So what are they, like, ranked last in the SEC in third down defense or something?

John: Not quite last, but they're definitely down there. Twelfth, to be exact. And in this league, that's just not going to cut it.

Not even close. All right, so we've got turnovers, we've got third down struggles. If Auburn wants to pull off the upset against Missouri this weekend, what needs to happen? Well, for starters, they've got to clean up those turnovers. It sounds obvious, but it's true. They need to protect the ball. And defensively, they've got to find a way to get off the field on third down.

Pressure the quarterback, disrupt passing lanes, something.

Lisa: Make life difficult for [00:03:00] Missouri, got it.

John: Exactly. Because if they don't Well, let's just say it's going to be a long rest of the season for Auburn fans.

Lisa: No sugarcoating it, this game is huge. Alright, let's shift gears now to the NFL. We've got some exciting matchups coming up this week.

And you know what? I'm already getting pumped for it.

John: You and me both. The Buffalo Bills going up against the Tennessee Titans, that one really jumps out. Even though Josh Allen has had his share of ups and downs this season, the Bills have a dominant defense. That makes them the favorites for sure.

Lisa: You know, I've got my eye on that.

AFC North clash between the Bengals and the Browns. The Bengals offense is just explosive. Joe Burrow, Jamar Chase, Tee Higgins, they're lighting up the scoreboard. But the Browns have a mean pass rush. That could make things interesting for Cincinnati.

John: It's gonna be a heavyweight bout in the trenches, for sure.

And speaking of intriguing matchups, how about the Texans and the Packers? Two young quarterbacks, CJ Stroud and Jordan Love, both trying to prove themselves. I wouldn't be surprised If this one turned into a shootout.

Lisa: [00:04:00] Now I know some of our listeners live and breathe fantasy football, and this week is huge GE.

With bye weeks and those pesky injuries really starting to shake things up.

John: Couldn't agree more. If you're scouring the waiver wire in desperation, let me give you a name. Zach Charbonneau, running back for the Seahawks. He's seeing more touches, and with some teams on by, he could be a lifesaver.

Lisa: Interesting. Okay, so say I'm in a PPR league, and for those of you who might be new to this whole fantasy thing, PPR stands for Points Per Reception, which basically means you get points for catches, not just yards and touchdowns.

Announcer: Alright, specials. Let's talk about specials. You want to talk about special?

You got 75 cent wings on Wednesday. That's at half pot. You want to talk about special? You had 6 bottles of wine on Thursday. That that's like a turkey with six or seven lines. You just can't beat those kinds of specials while the TV and the sports are playing all your favorites. That's all at halftime.

[00:05:00] Now let's get back to the podcast.

Lisa: Who should I be targeting in that format?

John: Well, in PBR, you gotta love a running back who catches passes,

Lisa: right?

John: Rico Dowdle of the Cowboys is your guy. He's been heavily involved in their passing game, which means points, points, points.

Lisa: Love it when a plan comes together.

All right, give me a stardom hot take for week seven. Who's a player you think is gonna absolutely ball out?

John: Raheem Mostert of the Miami Dolphins. Yeah. Their starter, Devon A. Chang, is out with an injury.

Announcer: You want to talk about your best commentary for Crow? It's legion sports, particularly Auburn. You found the right place.

This is the tigers halftime breakdown. You come here when you want to know all about fantasy sports, who to start this week, who to sit and what to do as you promote your great, great football team. Now let's get to it. Get to the podcast,

John: which means. Mostert is the lead back now. And guess what? The Colts, their opponent this week, have been atrocious against the [00:06:00] run.

Start Mostert with confidence.

Lisa: Music to my ears. Okay, flip side. Who's a player, maybe even a big name, that you're hitting the brakes on this week?

John: This might raise some eyebrows, but I'm benching Daniel Jones, even if he's cleared to play from that injury. The commander's defense is no joke, and I don't trust him in this matchup.

Sometimes you gotta make the tough call.

Lisa: No risk, no reward, as they say. Speaking of tough situations, let's get some injury updates. Justin Jefferson is obviously still a huge question mark for the Vikings.

John: Huge. It's a massive blow to their passing game. And, you know, Jordan Addison has actually stepped up in Jefferson's absence, becoming a favorite target for Kirk Cousins.

But it's just not the same without Jefferson on the field.

Lisa: You can say that again. Any other injuries we should have on our radar?

John: Austin Eichler, the Charger's running back. He's back from injury, which is great, but he hasn't looked quite like himself. Fantasy managers should temper their expectations for now.

Lisa: Man, we sure covered a lot today, huh? Auburn fighting to turn their season around, the NFL [00:07:00] landscape always keeps us guessing, and fantasy football, ooh boy, those decisions are getting tougher every week, am I right?

John: That's what keeps us coming back for more though, right? That unpredictable nature of it all.

Lisa: You said it, so much of this deep dive to unpack, but if our listeners were to take away just one thing, one key takeaway, what would it be?

John: For the Auburn faithful out there, I think the message is pretty clear. It's gut check time. Can they eliminate those backbreaking turnovers? Can they harness the power of their red zone defense?

This next game, it's make it or break it.

Lisa: No doubt about it. You know, it makes you wonder what's going through Coach Freeze's mind right now, what he's saying to his team in the locker room.

John: Right. Drawing up plays is one thing, but getting those guys to buy in, to execute under

pressure, That's the real challenge.

Lisa: I wouldn't want to be in his shoes. You know, I'm going to be watching that Auburn game with a whole new perspective, trying to put myself in his position.

John: Yeah, I bet you will. And you know what? That's the beauty of [00:08:00] sports, isn't it? It's not just about watching the game. It's about really getting into it, analyzing it, letting it get you fired up.

Lisa: Couldn't have said it better myself. Alright everyone, that wraps up another Deep Dive. We'll be back next time with even more sports insights to fuel your passion and hopefully lead you to some victories, both on the field and in your fantasy leagues. Until then, keep those heads in the game.
